Playing every single draw, forever

Two things jump out. First, Mega Millions takes longer in calendar time than Powerball despite near-identical odds — because it only draws twice a week instead of three times. Second, the cost column is the real story: reaching the point where a win is merely expected would take $584 million of Powerball tickets to win a prize that has never once reached $2.1 billion. The arithmetic of the game is visible right there.
Lotto America, meanwhile, needs "only" 166,600 years — about eleven times kinder, which is the same eleven-fold odds advantage we cover in our comparison of the three national games.
Now the realistic version
Nobody plays for a million years. The meaningful question is what a lifetime of playing buys. Suppose you start at 18 and play every single draw until you are 68 — 50 unbroken years.

Fifty years of unbroken commitment to Powerball — never missing a drawing — leaves you at roughly 1 in 37,000. Not 1 in 37,000 per draw: 1 in 37,000 that it ever happens across the entire half-century.
What if you play heavily?
Scale it up. Spend $20 a week on Powerball — ten tickets a week, every week, for 50 years. That is 78,000 tickets and about $156,000 of your money.
Your probability of ever hitting the jackpot: 1 in 3,747.
Put plainly, you could spend the price of a house on lottery tickets across your entire adult life and still be overwhelmingly likely — about 99.97% likely — to never win the jackpot once. That is not bad luck; that is the game working exactly as designed.
The honest interpretation
None of this means "don't play." It means be clear about what you are buying. A lottery ticket is not a savings plan with a long horizon; the horizon is longer than the species. What a ticket genuinely buys is a few days of permission to imagine a different life, and that is a real product — it just costs about 40 cents on the dollar.
Two things that do follow from the maths. Play money you would be comfortable simply spending, because in expectation you are spending it. And if you play anyway, prefer the games where the arithmetic is least brutal — cheaper tickets and shorter odds — which is what the most winnable game in every state map is for.
