How Pick 5 works

Pick 5 is a five-digit game: instead of chasing a jackpot, you choose a 5-digit number (from 00000 to 99999) and win a fixed amount set by how you bet. A Straight matches all 5 digits in exact order and pays the top prize of $50,000 — a 1 in 100,000 shot — while a Box matches the same digits in any order for a smaller prize that comes up more often. Maryland draws it Twice daily at $0.50 or $1 a play.

Digit games are the most transparent corner of the lottery: the odds are short, every payout is fixed and published up front, and there is no rolling jackpot to build. That also makes the house edge easy to see — the lottery keeps a set share of every dollar wagered no matter which number you pick, so it stays a negative-expected-value bet played for fun, not profit.

Our archive holds 286 Pick 5 draws going back to 2025, which powers the number-frequency statistics — the most and least common numbers, current hot and cold streaks, and the longest-overdue numbers. Those describe what has already happened; because each draw is independent, no number is ever truly ‘due.’

Most and least common Pick 5 numbers

Across 286 draws on the current 0–9 number pool (since 2025), the numbers drawn most often are 2 (158), 1 (156), 0 (153), 9 (152), 4 (146), 8 (141). The least often: 4 (146), 8 (141), 3 (136), 6 (133), 7 (128), 5 (127).

The commonest leads the rarest by about 24%, and that means nothing at all. Over this many draws ordinary random variation produces spreads of roughly this size — a fair game would almost never land every number on an identical count. No number is "due", and none of this predicts the next draw. We count only draws from the game's current number pool, because earlier draws used a different one and mixing them manufactures a pattern that was never there. We tested whether hot numbers actually win.

About this data

Every figure here comes from official lottery sources, refreshed after each drawing. We compute the odds from the game's published rules and, where the prize structure allows, the expected value of a ticket. See our methodology page for the full method, and the guides on expected value, how the odds work and whether hot numbers win.
